Why is the label called "Got Beats"?
Circa 1989, I {Youn' Gie} got word of a freshman who had some fire lyrics. We met, he spit, & the rest was history! It would have actually been a battle, but, I was so impressed with his { Kool 'E'} flow , I asked him to join the team. Eventually, we broke off from the old group, & started our own, (Hip-Hop Bishops). One day, on a bus ride home, we started up a lil' session for some of our fans from school. My stop came first. Later 'E' called me to say, "this guy from the bus wants us to get at him about some tracks". Too good to be true, we fell thru to the studio (a room at this kats crib), & once he (J'Vaunte) laid some beats on us, .... the rest was history.
Many years, talent shows & demos later, we were three friends walking different roads in life. I had joined the Army & returned home, E had finished up some college, & J'Vaunte had been lacing tracks for some heavy-hitters in the industry. By 1996, HH-B had split, but we always kept it moving as far as the music. Late 2004. I had'nt seen J'Vaunte in almost 2 years. He had really looked out for us when it was necessary, & I felt as if we had'nt gave back to the guy we looked to like a big brother. So, I finally caught up with J. We politic about old times. After lacing me with some new joints, I say to him, "let's start a production company, I can help you sell beats!" Hince the name "Got Beats" productions. Early 2005. E is working on the final touches for his Street Literature EP, with J'Vaunte laying down all the tracks. Everything's like it use to be. I'm picking up beats for my "SmallTimeHustle" album. One day, I stopped by to see J. He puts in a cd of some songs he composed. He says, "I'm working on this Jazz album." Kool. We check it out, & right then I thought " oh, people need to hear this sh!t!." I was inspired! I took the cd home, titled it, designed the artwork, gave the tracks titles, etc. This is when I discovered how much was behind putting out an album.
We've learned from the release of that album, & strive to build a unique family of artists, that can entertain different people from all walks of life. When the Street Literature album was finished, Kool 'E' was the second artist to sign to Got Beats Records. Later, by happenstance, I received a bulk e-mail from an artist that I personally ignored at first, but is now proving to be a dedicated team player, & one of the strong points of this family. Acho, the third addition to the label, hails from Lagos, Nigeria. The only way to live up to the multi-genre concept of the label, was to broaden our scope, & welcome other brands of music. That's just the first round of artists. Their releases alone will keep us busy, & you entertained well into 2007. Be on the lookout for our next Hip-Hop artist, Uneeq. We'll also be introducing an R&B genre to the label this year. Oh, it ain't over. The future is now. This is Got Beats Records. Experience history in the making!
